What you need is a router, 2 network cards and 2 network cables.

What you are thinking about as a splitter would not work for the signal you need coming in.

you need a router, if the computers are in the same room then a wired router will do the job perfectly. if however you want to connect two or more computers that are not in the same room then a Wi-Fi router with a wi-Fi adapter in each computer that you want to connect.
you will need to set the security on your wireless network so only authorised computers can gain access because if you don't and live in an area like london or any large city you could find you get locked out or blocked form your own network.

You need a router, i recommend the BT voyager 205, it can be reconfigured to run with any internet service provider. It has a USB connection for one pc and an ethernet connection for the other. You can pick them up quite cheap now on ebay. you can get extremely long ethernet cables if your pc is in another room, I have a 20 meter cable.

If the router is also a switch then you just need 2 network cards and 2 lengths of CAT5 cable, other wise you'll need to purchase a switch/hub as well. Each of the machines will need to know the routers IP and have unique IP's themselves.

You need an ADSL modem that will attach to a hub, or a router that will also dial your connection.
If you dont have that look up internet connection sharing in the windows help files.

You set up just one, then buy some wireless network cards and link your other PC to the main PC... once you have them talking, go to the main PC and "enable" "share Internet connection"... It's easy

If you pick up a wireless router, then you can plug one computer into it, and the other can receive the signal wirelessly anywhere else in the house.
