that happened to my sister's fish. unless you are the reason it died (not feeding it, making its water too warm, etc.) don't get him a new fish. just tell him that it died and that you are willing to go with him to pick out a new one. if you did accidentally kill it, then either try to find one exactly like it, or just be straight forward and tell him. it is always better to tell the truth than to try and cover it up.
