How does it differ from others, such as electromagnetic and gravitational fields?

The previous poster has it right, pretty much. There is a lot of information on the Higgs Field, and it's easy to find on the internet.

Higgs field is a rather interesting field to physicists. While electromagnetism is a field carrying a force- opposites attract, right- the Higgs Field doesn't carry so much a force as a property.. the property of mass. The Higgs Boson is neatly included in the Standard Model, which oddly describes the three forces of electromagnetism, the stroung nuclear force, and the weak nuclear force, while not describing gravity where the Higgs Field might be considered the most relevant. This is not, of course, to say that the Higgs Field and gravity are mutually incompatible. Hope I helped.
