I think the first thing to do is look at Task Manager, and see if there is a process that shouldn't be there that is eating up CPU.
If there is something that is clicking along at 20, 30, or 40% on a continuous basis, do a Yahoo! search and see if it is malware or some such.
You probably haven't had the computer long enough to need to defrag the hard drive.

Have you been cleaning out the temp files on a regular basis? Have to installed and/or removed several programs and haven't done a defrag? As far as your friend's profile, if it's password protected, I believe you'll need the password to see what's in his profile.

You have probably installed a lot of programs since receiving it. Almost all programs run a small version of itself at startup.
Click: Start, click: run, type: msconfig [enter]
Select the startup tab and remove any programs that you dont want to start when the computer comes up.

try some of the registry fixing programs, optimizers etc. But the preinstalation of the operative system is the best option. Why messing in other people's things :)

Have updated virus scans, empty out your recycle bin, and find the folder "cookies" and delete everything except the index file within the folder.
