I have been at my current job for about 1 month. I was hired as a 9 month temp, with full benefits. This job makes me miserable. Recently, a position opened up that is higher in pay, permanent, and it would make me happier. Is it too soon to apply for this job? Should I stick it out for 8 more months? Obviously, I might not get the other job... but the thought of telling my department, that I'm already planning on bailing, scares me.

Okay.. so do I warn my current job that I'm applying , or wait and see? If I got the job, they would definitely contact my current department for references, so it might be awkward if they have no idea that I'm even applying.. But then again, I might not get the job.. so do I ruffle their feathers for nothing?

What are you worried about?
You have to do what is going to make YOU happy.
Why stay at something you hate?
If they were planning to downsize or not hire you after the 9mos., what would you think? They would do what's best for THEM.

I am assuming the other job is with a different organization. If you are miserable, then go ahead and apply. In the meantime, is there anything you can do in your current role to ease the misery? Start with this: what makes you most miserable? what are your pain points. Are any of these solvable?

If you go to work miserable, eventually its going to spill over to your personal life, and then your going to be miserable all the time. I say apply, if you got the one job as a 9 month temp im sure they would be able to replace your position quickly.

You should apply for the other postition. Even if you don't get it, they will know you are interested in moving up and bettering yourself. Don't stick with something that makes you miserable, life is too short. Good luck!
