Don't quote me on it but I have a feeling that in the book the 39 steps were down to the sea somewhere in SE england, but in the film they were in Big Ben.

no no no, not big ben! the 39 steps (in the original hitchcock film with robert donat) were a secret organisation of spies involved in making aircraft that had completely silent engines!
