If the thrown ball hits the base coach, then the play is still alive, according to rule 5.08:
"If a thrown ball accidentally touches a base coach, or a pitched or thrown ball touches an umpire, the ball is alive and in play. However, if the coach interferes with a thrown ball, the runner is out."

If the ball is THROWN and hits a base coach, it's a live ball, IF it's still playable. If it were to hit the coach and go into the stands, it becomes a dead ball.
But if it's THROWN, it's a live ball. Example, if a pitcher tries to pick off a runner, and the throw hits the coach, it's still live.
If the ball is HIT, then it would become a foul ball, since the coaches are in foul territory.

The question was what about a thrown ball not a hit ball (reading and comprehension are fundamental). Since the coaches are out of the field of play there can be no interference. If in the judgment of the umpire they may award the runner an extra base.

Amazing how many wrong answers people give. If the base coach is in the coaching box and doesn't intentionally make contact with the ball, the ball is simply a live ball.

The base coaches are simply 'part of the field', like the ball hitting the wall - it would only be foul if it lands foul after the hit - if a player catches it after the hit, ball is still in play.

if a thrown ball hits a base coach while he is in the coach's box then it is a live ball and can still be played, just as if it hit the ump.
if the ball hits him and he's out of the coach's box then it is a dead ball and the runners return back to the base they were on.

The ball is live and in play. If there is INTENT by the coach to interfere with a thrown ball, the ball is dead.

If it hits a base coach, the ball is in foul ground and the runner will advance to the next base.
