Marigolds-- if there are nematodes in the ground after planting your tomatoes-- marigolds seem to clear nematodes out-- no I don't know why. You find out if nematodes are present when you are finished with the tomatoes and pull the roots up-- nodules on the tomato roots are supposed to be caused by nematodes. And that is the reason for not planting tomatoes in the same space every year. Of course nutrients removed by the previous years plants may be part of the reason, too.

Switch to peppers or another veg.
