I'm in a marching band, and I'm havin some trouble with playing and marching at the same time. I'm a trumpet player, and I try to keep my upper body stiff, but its just almost impossible. Also, sometimes i have a hard time rollin my toes through the step.. Any tips? My sound is usually wobbled when I march. Its completly frustrating.

Practice, practice, practice! that's the only thing i have to say. I'm in colorguard and it took me a while to learn how to march and toss a flag 10 feet in the air! the only thing i can offer is to try one step at a time. practice just playing the music and marking time. then then march in a straight line until you finish a couple measures. slowly add more and more turns and different steps. but take it slow: remembering heel to toe, heel to toe! try imagining that there is a wall or something barely above your head that you don't want to touch. it will help you make sure your body isn't bobbing up and down which makes your sound come out "wobbly". there's not much else i can tell you. just practice one step at a time!

I too used to be in marching band. One thing to do is practice at home, alot. I know firsthand its very difficult. Another thing is check out your feet. If you are flatfooted (that means little or no arch in your foot) it makes rolling your feet very difficult. If you are, maybe you can see a foot specialist for some advice on insoles to help with this. If that's not the case, then you just need to practice some more. You'll get it! It just takes time and patience. Good luck!

Unfortunately, you will just need to practice playing and marching at the same time. Try practicing just marching and "pretend" playing in order to concentrate on getting the steps and beats right. You'll get it with time, trust me on this one!

Babe, you need rhythm! Practice in your room. You and the trumpet need to become ONE, then you can concentrate on the feet!! Just don't quit - you can do this! Oh yeah - remember to have some fun with it!!!!
