My wife's father died a long time ago and her family lore says he played for the Chicago Blackhawks for 1/2 a season before quitting to get a better paying job (kids were on the way). How do I verify this? He has an etched drawing of him in a Blackhawks uniform on the back of his tombstone but I have never seen the actual picture.

There is a book called "Total Hockey-The Official Encyclopedia of the National Hockey League". It lists everyone that has ever played, just about. I know of people that only played 5 or 6 games and they are listed in it so you might want to try that book.

That would be hard as they bring guys up and send them down to the minors all the time. Usually the only ones that are listed for the season are the ones who A) were on the team at the beginning of the season or B) were on the team when they made the playoffs (if they made it that particular year).

If you know the year you can try to look it up in some sports almanacs, but again probably the same issue. The only other thing i can think of is trying to find a Game Guide (Whatever they call them) during the time he was playing.

hockeydb.com is the best resource for this, but even they admit that their records are not 100% accurate. The digital age has not been upon us for long and researching records over a 100 year span is not the easiest thing to do.

However, if his name does appear there then it is a fairly safe bet that he did indeed play for the Blackhawks. They typically err on the side of not including someone rather than adding someone that cannot be verified.

I would not give up the team resource to easily. The trick (and difficult part!) is finding the right person within the organization. There is usually someone involved with the clubs who are team "historians" so to speak.

google his name with chicago blackhawks, contact the organization if they have any records of him on file.. since it was a half season he won't be in the team picture because it's taken at the beginning of the season.. if he accumulated any points he should be in one of the NHL's databases..
