Without a shadow of a doubt, the recent trilogy of "The Lord of the Rings." Sure the books are more expansive and narrative of the story (they always are!), but the action sequences were surely some of the best ever put on film.
The casting in the Harry Potter films was superb, particularly for such a young cast.
Apocalypse Now! was a great modern adaptation on a nineteenth-century novel.
[Apologies for going with all the big commercial blockbusters, but they're the ones that stand out @ the moment]. More l8r maybe...

Interview with the vampire. Anne Rice the auther whe the one who did the screen play so its almost perfect . But the didnt let her write the one for Queen of the damed so the move isnt even close to the book , if you liked the movie read the book and you'll hate the movie
