As a black woman and marathon runner, the sun does enough damage to my hair...so there is no way that I can press it everyday to get it straight. I appreciate my roots and love my curly hair, but some days I like it straight and others I wear it curly. As such, I've opted for very very light relaxer and do not leave it on for more than 10 minutes----that's with putting it in and everything. But I wanted to know if I coluld be affecting the brain growth and blood system of myself and my unborn child. I always base my hair and eat only organic foods - whenever some ridiculous craving doesn't hit (smile).

So I'm just trying to be certain that I'm not harboring a negative environment for myselgf and my child. My GYN is non-black so I'm not sure if she'd understand my hair. So if there are any sisters out there who are marathon runners, and are pregnant or have been and still want to be fit and fabulous, please help me.

If the chemical calcium hydrox is harmful, please help!

There is minimal chances that you are doing any damage to your unborn child. And congradulations, just the same. As long as you are concerned, you appear to have more on the ball than most expectant mothers, regardless of race. A healthy diet (vitamins and any prescribed medication from your doctor) and exercise is the best for both you and the baby. Good luck and again congradulations.

One thing that women were gifted with is a women's intuition. If you have to question it and you think that may be harmful to your unborn child then go with out it for nine months. We as black women just a good in our natural state then having chemicals in our hair. Look through magazines and find some easy to manage natural hair styles until the baby arrives. Hopefully someone can answer your question medically and you can combine the answers. I do know that because of your hormones you have to leave the perm in a little longer or you have to get a stonger strength perm. Try brushing the roots a little longer, maybe twist, braids, a ponytail, hair piece etc... we are lucky when it comes to our hair because we have many options. Good luck.

I'm not a marathon runner but I am a sister and I just had a baby 4 months ago. When I was pregnant I got a perm and I let it seat for the correct amount of time and it did not affect my baby not one bit. So good luck! And how far along are you? And is it a boy or girl.

I'm not African American, a marathon runner or any of the above, but I can answer your question as I'm a pharmacist.

Calcium hydrox / hydroxide is perfectly fine, its actually used by dentists for endodontic infections, and in root canal treatment. It works just like an anti-bacterial drug and also has protein binding properties. When applied topically or through hair it is safe. As for affecting brain growth impossible. Blood stream, highly unlikely.
