My black hollyhocks (3 year old) were over 7 feet tall and beautiful. They are kinda spent right now, had to stake them up and it's time to just cut them. I noticed a dozen new, small leaves at the base of the plant, just like this spring.
I live in NH and it should be warm here until sept. Does anyone know if they will give me a second bloom?

I ran across this at one website. It may be the answer to what is happening with yours.

Hollyhocks will reseed themselves if the flower spikes are allowed to go to seed. However, if you want a neater appearance to your garden and *the possibility of a second bloom period*, cut the stalks down to just above the ground after they finish blooming. To encourage regrowth, make a light application of a fertilizer with nitrogen and phosphorous.

Maybe they are doing some of this by themselves for some reason? You might give it a try -- good luck!

I think hollyhocks only bloom once a year. They are really pretty. My grandmother had them in her flower garden when I was younger.
