Pensioners often make the headlines - often with the underlying theme that they deserve more money etc etc

Many many do and I have no problem with that at all - they fought in WWII, made the country what it is etc - case closed..

What I wonder about though is why the group is treated as all deserving - within the pensioner group is as wide a range of people as in the general population -

Within it is -

Ex-Sex Offenders, Murderers, People who have never worked, Really rich people etc etc

So if it makes sense - I mean why is there never any acknowledgement that over 65's are as diverse as the rest of us and A FEW may not deserve a cosy retirement?

I work with the elderly and by and large as a group they are treated like crap. Once you hit retirement age you are sidelined by society. Age brings many problems, deaths of friends and relatives - leading to loneliness and social isolation, the loss of self-esteem (that many people find through their work), having to cope with change and new ways of living that don't gel with your upbringing, failing health and the ageing process - wrinkles, false teeth, baldness, greying hair, loss of libido, memory loss, deafness, failing eyesight....what fun! Yet I know plenty pensioners with a great sense of humour and devil may care attitude.

By the time I hit retirement I doubt there will be much of a state pension and for most of us these days it's hard enough just paying the bills and eating never mind saving for our retirement.

Society and the media are very much youth orientated and given the fact that we are an ageing population we'll probably have to work beyond the current retirement age anyway. Having said that I don't think I hear the elderly moaning about their lot - they were brought up tougher than the younger generations - without a lot of the advantages we have had. All in all I think pensioners deserve better and as a society we should think more about our old people and respect them more. Thats the mark of a civilised society.

Apparently once you hit 65 all your sins are wiped away and you are instantly branded as "aged and helpless". Which, obviously, is complete garbage, especially since today people live longer and healthier lives.

It sounds to me like you're talking from the UK... here in America we all pay into the system for our entire working lives which is why we all feel we're entitled to it, whether we're really rich or not. The amount you pull out is supposed to be based on what you put in (never an equal amount!) but even if you don't put anything in (illegals, murderers, etc) you are still able to receive various federal benefits.

You are so correct though that these systems need complete overhauling. They no longer provide the benefits or services needed by the vastly diverse group of people.

Smiley I have to answer a question with a question. Do you have a reason to ask this question, which is very good one?

As a pensioner myself I have never expected anything other than what I worked for. And my state pension is not free to me but it is what I contributed to all my working life by national insurance contributions and income tax.

You mention about sex offenders and those who have never worked getting more money it annoys me as well because I get just what I am owed and do not get help with anything such as housing benefits, free this and free that. It all needs a shake up if you ask me.

This country is supposed to be a democracy but that's a joke!
It's rules for one and rules for another!

No I am afraid you will always get those who know how to abuse the system and spoil it for those who are really in need of extra help.

Because my darling the government let them down, they worked hard all there lives to be given a poor pension and now families don't live close to one another anymore so the elderly are now more vulnerable than ever. Even at an age that some class as old they still have so much to give a community which makes them a valuable asset, we as a younger generation should treasure that and embrace the knowledge that they hold.

I think that they should look at the lives of these pensioners before they start giving them money. I agree with you about all of them being diverse, any people that have been in prison or are on a sex offenders register should be given no money at all. It would serve them right for what they did. People who have never worked should be made to work for once, lazy buggers. And finally people who have had any type of illness that has prevented them from working and creating their own pension account should receive more money to make the final years of their life worth living. I.E people who have had cancer

I do a lot of domestic electrical work for pensioners... i always feel sorry and treat them as kindly as possible with the invoice... but often I've been told, Oh that's cheaper than I expected, and been paid in pound notes from a huge roll.... I still treat them well, but I think they are often better off than I am...

Well said. Pensions and benefits should be removed from people who offend and have never worked. I work very hard for a living to provide for my family and our future and it makes we want to scream when I have to subsidise the deviants and malingering spongers.

All benefits including pensions should be assessed based on contributions and criminal convictions.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

manhattan is often used as "manhattan" through fact some time past a accepted human beings hero (Johnny Appleseed) planted a single seed interior the middle of the city. I suppose you have a point, but you made the counter arguements yourself. They generation that went before us worked hard, and fought hard to perserve our way of life. No group is homogenous, there are old reprobates out there who deserve little I guess, but you can't tar them all with the same brush.
