The cheapest way to ship it would be be common carrier such as FedEx Freight, Yellow Freight, Roadway, etc.. The mattress would need to be crated before any carrier would accept responsibility for damage in transit. You will also pay based on volume instead of weight because the carriers goal is to maximize and balance the volume and weight carried on any given trailer. In addition, you are a one time shipper, and will pay a premium price compared to a commercial venture that ships daily based on an annual contract. There are no other options.

In the end, it would not surprise me if it cost well over $500.00 to send a used mattress that is probably worth a lot less.

Best advice is to sell in LA, and buy a new one in Atlanta.

Good luck with your situation.

Have you given any thought to working your way across the country using the mattress for curb service? You'd likely make plenty to pay for the shipping!

Better be one heck of a mattress! If you are not shipping as part of a lot of other stuff, shipping could be pretty steep for that.
