Basic answer is, yes, they can.

But I read all kinds of misleading responses here, such as the one that suggests that you can encourage a beard by shaving. This is not so! Not so for men, either, in spite of the old wives tale.

The responses citing hormones are more accurate. All human beings have the potential for growing facial hair. The hormones each of us carries determines how much and how fast we can grow it. Genetics is also a factor. Males tend to produce more testosterone, which promotes secondary sexual characteristics, such as deeper voices and facial hair. Women tend to produce more estrogen, which tries to inhibit facial hair.

Notice I use the words, "tends to." Men and women both produce each of these hormones. Many women, I would go so far as to say most women grow facial hair. It usually very fine and hard to see. That is why women pluck, shave and wax.

Beyond a certain age, women begin producing less estrogen and facial hair is more prominent. Again, shaving and such activities done in privacy means that most of us never notice it.

Yes, some women do have beards. One of the causes is the over production of Testosterone levels in their bodies. Both men and women have Testosterone with men have significanlty more (the reason they are men) however from time 2 time women do have too much and as a result they grow beards etc.

Of course, haven't you ever heard of "bearded ladies" for freak shows? Also some women get facial hair depending on their heredity rather than just isolating it to testosterone and hormone levels. Also don't believe the myth that shaving makes hair grow back thicker, longer or darker, it's just not true.

I think a woman can grow a beard.

I think some women make the mistake of shaving spots where they may only have a few hairs.

Shaving makes hair grow back thicker, like that of the llama.

i saw a woman yesterday with a beard, it is not attractive. i wouldn't recommend it.

after menopause it is more likely that you will have facial hair because of the lack of estrogen.
