So you're saying that there is no Specie 8470?

Species 8472 first appeared in the Star Trek Voyager two-parter "Scorpion" which was Season 3, Episode 26 and Season 4, Episode 1. A member of the species turned up in "Prey", Season 4, Episode 16; and we discovered Species 8472's ability to mimic humans in Season 5, Episode 4, "In the Flesh". "Species 8472" was the designation given to them by the Borg (who apparently like to assign a number to each different species of alien they assimilate).

Species 8472 was a race that inhabited an alternate universe/pocket dimension dubbed "fluidic space" (because their equivalent of space was, well, filled with fluid). The Borg had tried to invade their territory, but they struck back, proving to be resistant to the Borg's assimilation technology, and proceeded to cross over to "our" space.

Under the pretense that they did not strike first (and that 8472 just showed up and started making mincemeat of them), the Borg struck a deal with the crew of the starship Voyager to come up with a way to defeat Species 8472, in exchange for bringing them closer to home (Voyager, for those not familiar with the show, was thrown 70,000 lightyears from Earth and was trying to find its way back over the course of the series). Suspecting that if the Borg got the technology they needed, the Borg would go back on the deal and destroy/assimilate Voyager, Voyager's Captain Janeway managed to pull off a double-cross that would keep 8472 at bay, keep the technology to themselves, and still get some literal mileage out of the deal.

In "Prey," the Voyager crew interfered in the hunting down of a lone, stray member of the species by the Hirogen, an alien race whose primary form of recreation is, well, hunting.

In "In the Flesh," the Voyager crew uncovered and put an end to a plot by Species 8472 to disguise themselves as humans, infiltrate, and attack Earth.

To respond to the follow-up: Well, assuming the Borg number the species they assimilate sequentially, there must be a "Species 8470"--whatever alien species that was that they discovered two discoveries before 8472. However, we don't know what it is, nor has it been depicted on Star Trek. The people who are responding to you, like myself, are working on the assumption that you misheard or misread a reference to the better-known Species 8472 and thought it said "8470."

Do you mean 8472? Star Trek Voyager episodes The Scorpion I and II. This was the cliff-hanger for Season 4.

Edit: There is a species 8470, but I don't think that we saw them on Voyager. The species numbers refer to the order in which the Borg first encounter a species. We were exposed to quite a few of the species through seven, however, we obviously do not know all of the designations since there are over eight thousand of them.

Scorpion is a two-part episode of Star Trek: Voyager. It consists of the final episode of season three, which first aired on May 21, 1997, and the first episode of season four, which aired on September 3 of the same year. It introduced Seven of Nine (played by Jeri Ryan) and Species 8472 to the series.

Quick Overview: Voyager makes a deal with the devil in order to combat a new enemy.
