Yes you can live with SP1, Micro$oft cant do anything about it, Support what Support you are talking about, ok must be the patches, no problemo if they dont give you the automatic updates, you can download these patches, using Micro$oft's own tool, known as Micro$oft Baseline Security Analyzer(MBSA). see in this world its very important to know one golden rule, THERE IS ALWAYS A WORKAROUND IN COMPUTERS. So dont worry about these, i am using SP1 at my home and keep recieving updates (Although i use it only for playing games, i Love and adore Linux), and i am smart enough to not download windows genuine advantage update, by selcting the Option, Notify me but dont download automatically. Its not a problem and believe me there will be no problem, I am pretty sure that i dont have to pay for Windows XP in future as well lol.

Unless you want most of the new applications coming out that use the .NET Framework 2.0-- Which requires Service Pack 2 I think.

Or any new MySQL stuff.

Just... Upgrade... It's not that bad.

Anti virus does not protect you from all of the Windows exploits that are fixed in SP2, there is a difference.

You don't NEED to have SP2 installed, but it is recommended.
Not just for security but for stability.
But if you're worried about performance and visual quality theres an optimised version of XP available for free online.
Forget the name of it, miniXP or somethin like that.
