. Most people have never noticed that the sun is always behind you when you face a rainbow, and that the center of the circular arc of the rainbow is in the direction opposite to that of the sun. The rain, of course, is in the direction of the rainbow.

It's the device used by leprechauns to protect their pots of gold.
Folklore has forced them to indicate the location of their pot of gold by using a rainbow. Of course they wouldn't want anybody to be able to rob them that easily.
So they decided that instead of creating a solid object called a rainbow, they would use the clever trick of having light and water droplets create the rainbow when light hits the droplets at a certain angle and is decomposed a bit like what a prism does.
Therefore as you move, the correct combination of light at an angle and water droplets also moves, so you see the rainbow moving.
The only issue is that this means that the leprechauns keep moving their pots of gold; but they are a hardworking lot and rainbows aren't all that common, so they can have enough rest.

because the rainbow isn't really there...it's not an object...it's an effect the light makes with the raindrops in the sky...the raindrops work as a prism and create a rainbow when the light shines through

Its that canny little leprechaun on the gold chest that sits underneath... he somehow steers the "drop zone" away as you approach...
If you want his treasure you may have to ambush him from more than one direction... but he he can pull the plug at a moment's notice so your going to have to be fast.
