it was made illegal for a few reasons.
1)dupont's nylon was a substitute for hemp rope and dupont wanted the natural product eliminated

2)mexican-american farm workers were trying to unionize. marijuana was their drug of choice, so making it illegal made for an easy way to break the unions

3)black americans were achieving great things vis a vis the Harlem Rennassaince. again, reefer was the drug of choice, so making it illegal made for an easy way to keep holding down blacks.

4) "legal" drug manufacturers pay huge amounts of money to congress to make sure their drugs stay legal and their competitors are illegal.

5)the ignorance of the people keeps it illegal. for example, marijuana is not a gateway drug. that is not 'proven.' cigarettes, however, are a proven gateway drug.

Why is marijuana illegal?
-Pretty simple. The conservatives in congress refuse to think out side the box. For instance: their was actually a law during the civil war era that made NOT growing pot ILLEGAL. Hell, it was still legal when the guy who started the war on drugs was a child. (Ronald Regan). MJ has been legal 99% of the time it has been in use. It has been illegal for only 1% of the time that is has been in use.
-Not to mention that the US Government would have a hard time taxing the crop. This is due to the fact that seeds are abundant in your bags. Makeing it easy for you to grow. The only way would be if they legalized the higher grade (KB, Purple, ect.) where you dont find many seeds, if any. Prerolled blunts and joints anyone. Govern a little like cigarates maybe?
-Mind altering? I haven't seen any research done on this one, but I have drank and blacked out/passed out and that was more mindaltering than a blunt. More dangerous to. Not to mention a horrable hangover and vomiteing. It has been proven that drinking kills your brain cells while smokeing only slows them down.
- Its addicting? Not entirely true. I am sure that their are a few people out their that would become completly dependant on it, but then their are AA meetings for drunks, who by the way are more violent than anyone on MJ. The fact is, Their are no craveings for this "drug". Their have been signs that show that their may be a mental dependancey, but no side effects. Equivalant to wanting to smoke a cigarate, or drinking a beer. Have you ever tried to prevent a smoker his nicotine or an alcoholic his drink? You know the kind of reaction you get then, well someone wanting a blunt doesnt exert the same feelings of stress and tension as someone addicted to alchoal or nicotine. It is a fact that cigarate smokeing is more addictive than pot.
-Improper testing and fact reporting by the US Government. Just more proof that the government hides information from the public and then when they are proven wrong they deny it.
-Its a gateway drug. Not true. Farther from the truth than anything. If you believe this, then you probably still believe in Santa and the Easter Bunny. The only way it could possably be considered a gateway drug is because of the dealer you buy from introduces you to something new. Might as well say drinking coke is a gateway for alcohol. You buy it from the same place, its around you, you can mix alcohol in and not even taste it. The government says its a gateway drug because they make it so. Legalize MJ and see how many kids start poping pills, and shooting themselves up then. The fact is that that number would decrease. The war on drugs would then be forced to face the harder drugs, meth, crystal, even "x" or what ever else is out their.

I say legalize MJ and reduce our crime rate. We would have less people catching a bad rap because they like something that is cheaper than alcohol with the same effect aside from the hangover or even the danger of alchoal poisining.

Because they haven't legalized it, YET. Wait until the government can find a way to make money off it, by getting it off the streets and into taxable goods. There would be many benefits of legalizing it. We wouldn't have to see those stupid "Marijuana Harmless?" commercials. They are wasting way too much money on marijuana prevention, when there are WAY WAY WAY worse drugs becoming popular. Meth anyone?

Marijuana isn't a drug. It's a plant that grows out of the ground in natural settings.

Your television is more mind-altering than marijuana, but you let your kids watch it.

They had to employ all those Treasury agents after Prohibition was repealed. You didn't expect an entire government agency to shut down because booze was legal again. Anyway, the only people affected at the time (1937) were Black and we know how that always goes.

I once decided to to campaign to legalize marijuana for medical use by glaucoma and cancer patients.

There was some static from the conservative Christian sector, of course.

But the real threats were from drug growers, and dealers who do not want their high dollar crops to be legalized, and ruin their market niche!

The government hasn't found a way to profit from it yet, w/o being hypocrites, if they make it legal they cannot control it.
