I've never actually seen it but I can hear it going, "Whoo Whoo Who-ooo." What kind of owl could it be?

If it has a four beat call, accent on the first and third. It sounds like "whocooks, for you. This would be a Barred Owl. It is a bit smaller than a Great Horned Owl. The Barred is not as aggressive.

a owl fancier in england heard an owl in his back yard and decided to answer . cupping his hands he made a noise like an owl . to his amazement he got an answer . he kept this up for several days , all the time trying to locate this owl .
one night he was walking his neighborhood trying to find this elusive bird .
he gave a whoo whoo and got a reply almost beside him . he ran round a corner and there right in front of him was this great hulking next door neighbor .
apparently both men had been searching for each other thinking the other was a real owl !(TRUE STORY)

could be a mourning dove making the noise...but if it is an owl the Great Horned or Barn Owl may be the most common. Not sure where you are located..but these two species are pretty common throughout the U.S.

Most likely if you live in the south or west it is a great horned owl.It could however be a barn owl.

It could possibly be a Barred Owl, their call sounds like
"Who cooks for you, who cooks for you, who cooks for you all..."

maybe that is what you are hearing
