It is true that most celestial objects (stars and planets) are roughly spherical, though very few are perfect spheres. The reason is quite easy to understand.
All of these solid objects were originally formed from hot fluids that were without form and void, streaming outward from the point of origin, which is a known point in space that is either very, very far away, or just around the corner, depending on how you think about it.
As the gasses cooled into liquids, they began to take on the shape of spherical globs, for the very simple reason that a sphere is the shape that has the smallest surface area for a given volume. That is why a drop of water tends to become spherical, or a glob of pancake batter dropped into a bowl of cold water. The natural tendency of a fluid is to form a sphere because of the geometric property of a sphere just mentioned: the ratio of volume to surface area is the least possible.
It has nothing to do with rotation or other motion. It is simply a geometric law. To see pictures of celestial objects that are radically non-spherical, look up "asteroid," or "comet." These are of irregular shape because they are the broken remnants of a planet that had solidified before it broke apart.
There is no mystery in any of this. This is basic natural history known to anyone who PAID ATTENTION in sixth-grade science class.

Although this is quite a silly question, it does show how most people are completely ignorant of the most basic things about space.
No space probe can straight land on a moon or planet. They have to come in via an orbital path. Surely, that is obvious.
So, if planets were square, it would be impossible to do that.

Planets seem to be spheres, not cubes or cylinders or oddball rocky shapes. Some smaller bodies such as asteroids or Mars moons Phobos and Deimos, do have odd shapes, but larger bodies like the nine planets and most of their moons do look like spheres. That's because of the nature of gravity. You can think of gravity as a force that points inward toward the center of the planet so that every part of the surface is pulled evenly toward the center, resulting in a spherical shape.

Theory is, as gravity pulled everything equally into center location to form planets from gas clouds, the force of attraction would be equal in all directions. If a cube was used at each tip the gravity would be less, and the flat surfaces closest to the center would have the most gravitional pull. Considering that orginally the planets were fluid, without outside influence they would collapse into a spheroid- which is a fancy name for "kinda round"

All planetary bodies are not true round spheres The earth of course is one of them as our planet is sort of egg shape due to the influence of the poles.
As planets and moons form they are composed of gases and dust/rock/and collected liquids. All planetary material was at one time gas and dust only, and became rocky material as they cooled. It's probley that at one time the universe was so that all material was gas and cooled to a liuid such as water or gas such as oxigen. As these bodies coled the heavest material formed the center creating a heavy in core super heated liquid (the earth has such a center; a huge core of liquid iron) The lightest outer materials attracted by the gravational pull of the inner core begans to spin around the body (dust/liquids. other gase) collecting even more mass for the planet or moon as other material from space joins it. this continual spining motion and gravational pull is what forms the planet's shape. Other things which efects the planet or moon's shape is other clerlestral bodies neasr by such as jupiter, our moon ect.
Our moon creates much of the earth';s shape, tides, and may have formed from th eearth's colision with another planet or moon in the past. A square moon would have to be formed by an unnatural act (man made or other aid.. Being easier has nothing to do with it, it's all location, amount of material available and distance form the other bodies such as sun, moons or planets and what type of body they are (rocky, gas, liquid) and size.

Nature likes round shapes. Nature tends to round everything, including human beings, animals, trees etc. It must have something to do with gravity exerting an equal force on round objects, together with centrifugal forces caused by the rotation of the earth. Anything that breaks in an angular way is soon rounded by the action of wind and waves. Human beings, however, seem to like linear objects, (which are unnatural shapes) because we can measure them exactly. We can't actually measure the area or capacity of round objects exactly. Pi is only an approximation.

no, because gravity pulls equally in all directions. when the moon and such were formed by lumps of asteroids, they came from all directions. if a planet were somehow inexplicably square, than gravity would pull on the points untill it was all evenly spherical. besides, the earth isn't an absolute perfect sphere. its in a very, very shallow football shape. from where it is spinning, it is gradually flattening out. it wont flatten any more, though.

Laws of gravity say materials that come together in space gain mass and thus gravity. The nature of gravity is such that the matter collecting will collect in the shape of a ball.

I think it has something to do with the fact they were spinning when they formed.
Did you know there are no straight lines in nature? I heard that on some national geographic special and thought it interesting.
