Everytime the repair man comes to my house to fix my a/c he tells me that if I turn it below 72 Degrees that it will freeze over. Is this true? I have always had it set at 69 to 70. And it always is fine tell something goes wrong then he gives me a lecture. Is there a certain temp that I have to have it set at? I love to be cold and I cant stand to be hot. so Please help me. Thanks! Michael in Utah.

As cold as you want it. However old equipment may freeze up. How is explained here: http://home.howstuffworks.com/ac.htm

Basically the 'radiator' looking thing (evap coils) get so cold they freeze, which is what happens if it runs 24/7 or even for a while without the chance to cool down. In college on our window ones we would just put a bit of water on the coils and it would warm them enough to melt the ice...

I had this problems at our old house, if the AC ran a long time ice would build up in the system. We had to pay for a new unit before we could sell the house. Newer systems shouldn't have this problem.

However, running an AC below 70 is a horrible waste of money and energy. I keep mine in the upper 70s to keep my utilities bills down.

Mine only goes one temp... COLD!!! I wish I could set it at 70 or so but once it's on, it's on. Need to get that fixed but I guess I'm just not that opposed to waking up in a freezer. I love the cold air.

Well, it's about 90 here in NJ today, and I have my AC set at 75. I am very comfortable. I have never heard of an AC unit freezing up, but maybe yours is older or more prone to that.

Depends on your AC system, but we set ours to 67 degrees and it works just fine.

i hate AC so i have no idea. i don't really see why those couple degrees would hurt anything.
