Isn't that what happens in a hydrogen bomb? not sure.... anyway maybe because the atom cannot hold anymore electrons - so the release of an electron from the atom comes with a lot of energy.... just a wild guess.

The reaction is exothermic, with the exception of the noble gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr...) and the alkaline earth metals (Be, Mg, Ca, Sr...). In other words, energy is usually released.

The negative ion is lower in energy because the additional electron helps to dissipate electrostatic repulsion between the nucleus and the other electrons.

Atoms release energy in the form of electromagnetic radiation. The energy comes from the atom and the electron.
