You're his mom. You decide what is too over teh top. If you can afford an extravagant party then go for it. You only live once. And sounds like your party should bring alot of cute photos that you and your little one can look back when when he is older and say "Wow mom! You went all out."
HAVE FUN!!!!

This birthday party sounds like it's more about you. Many small children are terrified of costumed characters - my son would start sobbing if one came too close. And a huge party with a lot of people sounds like a recipe for a meltdown.
It is an important birthday, but perhaps celebrating with family and close friends, rather than a "blowout" would be more appropriate for your child. Save the bouncy castles until elementary school.

It's important yes, but for all that no! The party is mainly for the mom. Should be a get together with friends and family some cake and ice cream and lots and lots of gifts...I think you did go a bit overboard. I would of waiting for the 4th or 5th birthday to do that, he won't remember anything non the less get to enjoy any of it!

Of course it's important, it's his first birthday! You should be able to do whatever you want. Here's a suggestion that I did for my daughter's first birthday, he'll have a blast. Take an old bedsheet and spread it on the ground. Place him on it in just a diaper, and then set a cake down for him to look at, and just see what he does with it. It's so cool! Usually you can get a smaller cake at a bakery for this purpose when you get a bigger one that people are actually going to eat. Have fun!

Your baby will have no idea what's going on and won't remember anything about his first birthday (or second or third, etc.) My sister in law did the same thing with her son's first birthday...clowns, moon walks, face painting, etc. Really, all these things are for the guests, when you think about it. It was really funny...everyone (EVERYONE) went out of their way to find the cutest, most fun, most exciting toy they could. My brother in law's dad took a box that his new dishwasher was packaged in and wrapped it. That's all it was...just a giant empty box with colorful wrapping paper on it...but it was Trevor's (my nephew's) favorite present. He didn't care about the clothes, the toys, the shiny sparkly playthings...nothing. He just wanted to crawl through the gigantic box. (His grandfather started an IRA for him...that was his real present.) He was too small for the moonwalk, and screamed every time the clown came near him.

The first birthday party is *definitely* a big deal!! No, the baby won't remember, but you will. Maybe you are overdoing it, but it's your right to overdo if you choose to. Ignore those that are telling you not to.

In my opinion, turning one is a VERY important landmark--you survived a whole year! However, 'bouncy castles' sound a bit much, especially if your kid isn't even old enough to go in one. But I can understand--you want this to be special! Go ahead, if it's what you wanna do!

No...not for the kid, anyway. The one-year-old birthday is for the benefit of the mother. You overdo it if you feel like. It's all about you. :D

Every birthday is important; however, do you really want to go all out for the first birthday? Your child won't remember it anyway.
My daughter just turned one, and we just had cake, ice cream, and gifts at her grandparents house.
