We are not a free people. I don't think the founding fathers would be thinking when they made the constitution that a free people would have a 2 trillion dollar budget for the federal government.
We don't own our land. You need an allodial title which is only available in texas. Also the IRS can freely take your land if you decide that a tax on your property is immoral. I don't call this free.
"The moment the idea is admitted into society that property is not as sacred as the laws of God, and that there is no force of law and public justice to protect it, anarchy and tyranny commence. Property must be secured or liberty cannot exist."
-John Adams
Also the Kello v. New London decission last year where the Supreme Court said the government can take your land and give it to a private developer. This just adds to the tons of abuse of eminent domain.
If you don't have the right to property then we'll end up as the Soviet Union. Where there is secret police and people who disappear and are never heard of again.
Also the United States has all ten plancks of the Communist Manifesto. Here are the 10 plancks
1. Abolition of property in land and application of all rents
of land to public purposes.
2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.
3. Abolition of all right of inheritance.
4. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels.
5. Centralisation of credit in the hands of the State, by means
of a national bank with State capital and an exclusive
monopoly.
6. Centralisation of the means of communication and transport
in the hands of the State.
7. Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by
the State; the bringing into cultivation of waste-lands, and
the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a
common plan.
8. Equal liability of all to labour. Establishment of
industrial armies, especially for agriculture.
9. Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries;
gradual abolition of the distinction between town and
country, by a more equable distribution of the population
over the country.
10. Free education for all children in public schools.
Abolition of children's factory labour in its present form.
Combination of education with industrial production, &c., &c.
In conclusion the federal government has grown bigger then the founding fathers had in mind and the government that governs the best governs the least.

I can do those things. I can drink beer in my yard, I can gamble if I was stupid enough to throw my money away. If I put up a fence I can dance naked in my yard. and I wouldn't know about the adult toys here.

There is not a thing wrong with the things you mentioned.
Free is a relative term. We are free from... hmmmmnnn I can't think of anything we are totally free from.
Try the Netherlands. They are much free'er than we are in the usa. They can even walk nude in the streets and smoke pot without being arrested.
We are losing our freedoms everyday. As long as you let fascists take away civil rights in the name of fighting terrorism, we will always be less free.

Errr....If those are the things by which you define "freedom" then I suggest visit to a couple places:
Arlington National Cemetery
Gettysburg
Freedom Hall in Philadelphia
Normandy
I could go on, but you probably want to save some money for beer, sunscreen and "latex novelties."

The harm in the things you mentioned are that you ask about freedom on a national level then betray the fact you are a punk liberal - grow up

Not really that free at all.
-You can have 3 televangelist stations on basic cable but no sex channel.
-Churches are tax-exempt but Atheists are smeared and the "most distrusted group in America"(It's about money, not 'faith').
-Drug companies make Billions annually peddling synthetic poisons but you can go to jail for years for having all-natural marijuana.
-Right-wing brainwashing in this country via radio,Faux "news" networks and deliberate misinformation about non-conservatives is at all-time high.
And all of this is about money. Not God.Not religion.Not"morals".
Please.It's about cold hard cash.

the greatest thing that the 'establishment' has done is to convince that we are still 'free' when they have been eroding our actual rights for years
slavery is alive and well in the 21st century, you are a slave to many things - your job, mortgage, the stock market and your investments, your lifestyle or 'consumerism' in general
it has been a very cleverly maneouvered slight of hand by governments over decades

You're right, a lot of rules are silly. All freedom are relative. There's no such thing as Free Speech here, but if we truly had "free speech" you'd be scared, trust me.

I don't think any country is really free. In Britain we are taxed on everything: income tax, council tax, VAT, road tax, the list goes on. I think in a society where people are controlled through taxes and formalities no one is ever truely free.
