Always thought the detector vans being able to detect tvs switched on were a myth, don't they just check the register and call by people that aren't on it? I mean, what do they do? Have handheld electromagnetic radiation detectors? Yeah right :) Anyone know any different let me know! And why can't you just not let them in?

They are just a frightener. Put an old bicycle frame on a yellow van, write detector on the side and drive it around a certain area. Next day there will be queues at the Post Office, works.

You don't have to let them in. I think it's very unfair that if you're a guest in someones home and answer the door to these people then you're liable for the licence fee along with the friends. It's pretty impossible for the vans to detect tv's on boats. All that metal!!

Unless they have a search warrant / court order you don't have to let them in.

(I've been reading up on this topic myself today)

Chapter 1, section 2 - Point 7: They may only enter a property when given permission.

The offense is using a Television Receiver - So you can watch your video's and DVD's without any comeback. - Also as of 01/08/06 - you can no longer buy a TV license at the Post office.

Unfortunately they do have the vans with the detectors. I know this because my friend got caught in that way.

Basically, if you don't let them in on several occassions they can get a search warrant and confiscate your TV.

aparantly your tv still holds the magnetic fields in it for hours after being switched off and holds signal so even if you stash it in the loft when they come round they know where it is.the vans have the detector on the roof but when you buy a tvs anyway and give your name and address they pass on info to tv licence companys

they have both hand held and vans. The fine is heavy plus you have to buy a licence on top of it.

better to buy one in the first place.

If you refuse admission then they will know you have something to hide.
