The House and Senate are working on a bill to raise it from $5.15 an hour to somewhere around $7 over the next few years.

Many city councils are gettting tired of waiting for the Federal Government to do something about this. So Mayors, believe it or not, across the country, are changing the minimum wage themselves.
One recent article published in the newspaper was that Chicago raised retail workers minimum wages to $10.00 per hour. I'm guessing this has something to do with a Walmart.
However, general minimum wages across the board are being raised in many states.
With inflation taken into account as well as living expenses today, wages should be somewhere around $15.00 per hour.
But I guess most of the Feds want to start at $7.25.
I urge you to contact your Legislators for your state to tell them how you feel.

Not yet. The republicans have tacked on an amendment to attempt to keep the bill from passing.
The amendment that was added is a bill to kill the estate tax, what some propagandists (don't know if that is a word or not) call the "death" tax. This is a tax on extremely high value inheritances (currently over $1 million) that takes a percent of it (used to be 35% i believe, but it has been changing by year because of another bill that is set to expire in 2010) as a tax on earnings. This is in place largely to prevent a nobility class from forming through the creative use of inheritances.

On the federal level, Republicans and conservatives are fighting it. They believe an increase in the minimum wage will be harmful to the economy.
I think it just widens the gap between the haves and have-nots.

Yes! I live in NM, and in Santa Fe it's up to $9.50! Next year it will be $10.50, and then $11 the next year! Can you believe that? I think it's retarded. The cost of living goes up alongside it, so you can never really win, unless you commute, and with gas prices, it's still not a great idea. People thought it was a good idea when they thought they could work at McDonald's and make $9.50, but when they have to pay at LEAST $850 for an apartment in the "bad" part of town, I think they realized it wasn't such a good idea.

It is true that they are trying to get the minimum wage raise phased in over three years the bill just past in House but they are pretty much expecting it to fail in Senate. It is attached with a bill that eliminates estate tax on estates larger than 1 million :) Wait and see game for now. I am crossing my fingers. They want to raise it to 7.25 but like I said it will be phased in over three years if it does get past the senate. :)

it is in some places, not in others
in actuality, it hurts more than it helps people...
simple economics: it raises pay for some people but reduces the number of employees a company can hire...
