I recommend either:
AVG http://www.grisoft.com/doc/1
Antivir http://www.free-av.com/
I have used them both extensively and both work very well. I believe I have seen more reviews and ranking that favor the effectiveness of AVG overall in the free antivirus arena. FYI -You are absolutely not comprimising effectiveness by choosing free over paid, I would not choose a paid one at this point in time, so, good choice!
Paid "name brand" programs have actually been shown many many many times to be less effective at catching zero-day attacks and other viruses that are in the wild, and often are more vulnerable because of their wider user-base (same logistics as to why you see more attacks on windows platforms, more people use windows, ergo the threats are written for windows), there are no shortage of dangerous viruses that are written to attempt to (and in many cases are able to ) bypass norton or mcaffeee specifically, because they are so widespread in usage. Often they are actually SLOWER in response time in terms of updates as well compared to the free progs.

The best anti virus I have used, and it is completely free is AVG anti virus...they also have zappit which keeps your computer cleaned up and running smooth. You can do a search for free avg anti virus and it will take you to the web site. It really catches any and all viruses. I have used it for over 4 years and have never had a problem. Good luck!!!!

Well I might get reported for this , but I suggest that you get a trial version of a good antivirus and then search for the crack ;)

hi, i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any virus and spyware on webpage.
besides, firefox can block any any poppus and disable any virus and adware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE. as you know, most of the virus is spread throught internet and webpage.
firefox is much smaller than IE, so i run faster than IE.
