Poor George is not merely a monkey, but a fairly young one at that. His curiosity tends to get him in trouble, much as it does many of his young readers. Therein lies his appeal.

As an aside, reread the first book with a modern eye:

George was kidnapped from Africa. George was put to work. George leaned hard on the pipe from time to time.

At any rate, I'm a tremendous fan. No bad movie or ill-conceived presidency can ruin it for me.

he echoes the curiosity of the child, and gets into the sorts of scrapes a child would, if it were able to do what he does; thereby the child's sense of curiosity and imagination is validated by George, and the child vicariously lives through those those fun experiences without coming to harm.

(Of course one has to make sure the little darlings do not take the George books too literally and try to get hold of bundles of balloons)

Wouldn't be much of a book series if he wasn't. And even worse! He would have to change his name to Un-curious George!!!

.....because he never learns anything. If he could retain any knowledge he would not need to be curious all the time.
