Every cactus is a succulent, with rare exceptions - but not every succulent is a cactus. Cactuses, unlike other succulents. possess structures called "areoles" which are well defined areas on the cactus's surface from which little tufts of spines, bristtles or hairs sprout and the flowers bloom from the areoles as well. Cactus don't have leaves, nor branches, just joints. Cactuses are easy to grow and have very few simple requirements, native to the desert, they can tolerate high temperatures and does not require a lot of watering.

A lot of cacti are night-blooming! In particular Peniocereus gregii only blooms once a year!

The saguaro, the big cartoon-style cactus found in the Sonoran Desert, produces a purplish fruit that the Tohono O'Odham (Native American tribe) used to make a jam-like spread. (http://www.tucsonbotanical.org/exhibits_tohono.html)
