I hope you are not planning a suicide or anything crazy like that, but honeslty if you wanted your death to have to maximum effect on your loved ones I would lead the most Respectable life that when I die people cant believe such a great person is gone off this earth forever. I dont think gruesome death will leave more of an effect than being a great person who was an asset to this world gone forever.

Death itself is one of the two most dramatic occurrings on this earth. Getting born being the other. So, it doesn't matter how you die, it would surely leave those who know you moved.
However, being in tandem with your question, I'd rather choose an unusual way here. There is a state of meditation (according to the serious practitioners of it) where the consciousness almost gets separated from its physical body. Contradicting arguments exist about any such phenomenon, but people do have shown in the past how body can remain alive even without giving clear signs of pulse and breath for substantial durations.
I'd like to slip in a similar state of meditation several times, leaving my friends and foes equally confused...and then decide all of a sudden not to turn back at all. They can keep waiting until my body starts smelling foul. Of course, they will keep having nightmares of my returns for a long time to come, despite having cremated me personally!

I think if it were up to me, to have the maximum dramatic effect I would loan someone a large lump sum of money (to someone who could pay me back) and then I would die the day after they paid me back.

I think your question is utterly obnoxious!. A loved one dying is devastating enough, let alone the heartache and pain they will be going through, knowing they will never see this person again. We do not choose our demise,God does,so maybe you should ask him if it's ok for him to send you a "Multiple Choice" list; to see if you'll be able to choose your own death. If you choose to die a horrible death, then more than likely, your mourners will all pass out,and join you!

Beats me. I for one do not wish for my demise to "have the maximum dramatic effect" on my friends and family. Sounds pretty selfish and immature, like the thoughts of a suicidal fourteen-year-old. Are you compiling anecdotes for some kind of guide to suicidal teens or something?

I would jump off a tall building into a body of water -- while in mid air, i'd shoot myself with a sawed-off shotgun, and get eaten by sharks. if I by chance survived, I would OD on the illegal drug of my choice.
And for all those people who are sayin "a loved one dying is painful" and "suicide is cowardly way out" -- LIGHTEN UP! Geez, it's a hypothetical question that gives away clues about an answerer's personality. It doesn't mean we're all gonna kill ourselves today. If you have trouble talking about certain topics, your are on the wrong site.
And driftqueen_Z, telling the questioner to "kill yourself, your worthless" is really more noble than what he's asking. You're an idiot.
StiffGreyGoose: Your name suits you. No one's asking you, prudish biitch.

In some scene where you are dying in the arms of a loved one (doesnt matter how)
make last requests from all who you wish to have the effect on, only make the requests unattainable (only slightly however, so that they can get close to accomplishing it but never quite make it), so that everyone feels as if they failed you for not fufilling them.

There is no maximum effect possible, the death it self, no matter what the cause, will have the same effect. No matter how one dies, some will regret your passing , others won't.

After trying to get shorts for my fellow coworkers and myself while working in an un-airconditioned hangar, I would like to die from any heat related ailment. Then my family could sue my stupid security company for all they're worth. They probably still wouldn't let the guys wear shorts. Ignorant bastards.
