speaking as nurse I have to say the privacy in hospitals can be joke and the only way to reduce this is to have single sex wards the thought might be old fashioned but so are the huge majority of the patients in them!!!!

My husband stayed in a single sex ward when he had a triple hernia op - so it didn't really matter too much. I don't think that I would like to have to stay in one, though. I do find it strange that if you have children over a certain age, you shouldn't allow them to sleep in the same room if they are of the opposite sex, but you can sleep in the same room in a hospital, no matter what your age - with a person that you don't know from Adam! Can't see that there is a benefit for the patient - and I can't see how it makes it easier for the nursing staff. So why have it at all? In the hospital that my husband stayed in, there were easily enough 'wards' to keep the sexes separate.

Definitely no no to mixed sex wards!! I draw the line in the sand here.
This is just the starting point too where will it all end - [sharing a bed with another patient drinking tea out of the same cup] to save a few quid for the government to cover their backs to give them selves another pay increase.
All at the expenses of the sick elderly and disabled - the vulnerable and poorest in society.
Governments are supposed to serve its citizens.
Speak out don't be put in a mixed sex ward against your wishes you have human rights and if you feel this is degrading protest.

No. I am a nurse in hospital & it is important to keep men & woman apart. If a man tries to go into one of the female bays, we can stop him & re-direct him to the male bay. If the two sexes are mixed, an assault could take place (more than like on the female obviously) so by keeping them seperate, we can control a situation. Also, we try as much as possible to preserve our patients dignity whilst tending to their hygiene needs, so even with a curtain between them, a man/woman could feel much more embarrased if they knew a member of the opposite sex was on the other side.

i disagree with mixed sex wards and think hospitals generally are too big. surgery is like a conveyor belt and no wonder diseases like mrsa can spread. i also think admission wards are too big. you get elderly ladies screaming and tearing off their clothes, drunk men throwing up and terrify everyone else. staff shouting and people behaving like animals. it's like bedlam

I would hate the idea. Apart from the fact that I look hideous without make-up, and might kill the men off with the shock.

I think it is really unfair for the older generation, they deserve dignity and it can be really hard for them laying there surrounded by men.
