can anyone tell me how to shrink a cowboy/girl hat to give a better fit.?

I have bought a new hat that is a size large, this is just a bit too big. I need to know how to shrink the hat without doing damage to the hat.

You could let it shrink to fit naturally (fastest way is to wear it in a sauna & ignore the jokes or laugh with them) or wear it while you're sun bathing, you'll really be a tease to the pretty ladies and have a little fun too.

Otherwise, I would suggest using an elastic sweatband and pin or sew it on the inside (attached to the liner or inner brim), secure it at - at least four equal/even points, to allow the elastic to do its job. It will give you a slightly snug fit. Because the sweat band is filling in the excess space and holding onto your head at the same time.

Or just have a little fun, wear a bandana under your hat, or stuff money under the brim as if you were a stripper,... Be creative and just be yourself.

Most hats are steamed to fit. You could try the water and heat thing, but most likely you're going to end up with a problem - usually the hat will show a misshapen fit around the crown.

The best thing to do is to go out and get a 'hat fitter'. This is a special made fitter which goes inside the hat which snugs it up to the head. The hat stays looking good and you look good wwearing it.

I agree that you can't really shrink a hat without ruining it. One trick is to fold up a paper towel or two and put it under the sweat band (the band on the inside of the hat) or you can turn the sweat band under by folding it in half lengthwise.

you can spray the inside with water and sit in sun for 30 min -1 hour intervals. when it seems to be the right size put on head and start looking hot! This will work with felt, straw and leather hats.
