DoubleTree Hotel at Universal, Holiday Inn, Best Western, Hampton Inn, Wingate Inn, Days Inn.... these are all across the street from Universal. The DoubleTree and Holiday Inn are walking distance. The DoubleTree is very nice and you can get some good deals if you shop around.
There's a Homewood Suites and Hilton Garden Inn across I-4 on the other side of Universal. You can get a cab for maybe less than 5 bucks per trip. There are many other hotels on I-Drive, try American Blvd off of I-Drive.
The hotels on property are fairly expensive, but they are on property. The Hard Rock, Royal Pacific and the Portofino Bay Resort are your options.
I'd stick with the hotels on Major Blvd (the Doubletree, Holiday Inn, etc.) or in that area. Very close, nice and you can get a good deal!

Royal Pacific Resort, Hard Rock and Portofino are the ones in the park. I am currently planning a vacation in October and have been researching and have found that www.universalorlando.com is a good website to look at the hotels in the park....good luck...I am looking for tips on what to see and where to stay myself.

Do NOT stay at a Knights Inn. It is a fleabag (all of them in the Orlando area qualify as "fleabag".)
There are a ton of nice places... if you have kids the Doubletree Castle is really fun.

The Double Tree is right across the street from the parking garage. You can walk there and save $ on parking.
