I have a long career history in Collections but I just started a new job which also requires cold-calling companies to make sales. I'm great at collections but I am finding that in making sales calls, I am phone-shy and stumbling over my words. I do not want to sound like an idiot on the phone who doesn't know what they're doing. Any advice on how to relax and make the sale?

I would really appreciate it if people would stop posting insults to me when I am asking an honest question.

I am only looking for tips on how to do my job better because I want to succeed, and it is not a "dishonest profession."

What's dishonest is the people who sit on their butts all day, collecting money from the government and not bothering to work.

At least I am working and trying to make an honest living.

1. Accept that you will hear "no" most of the time. This is true in sales on any level.

2. Make sure you are speaking to a decision-maker. You don't want to get hung up with people who can't move the sale forward.

3. Find an angle. Talk about something that makes your company unique and helps you stand out among the calls your customers get every day.

4. Create a script. Come up with a good pitch, and though it'll sound rehearsed for a while, you'll soon have it planted well enough in your mind that you can make it flexible to deal with any situation.

5. Relax and act naturally. Don't alter your personality or voice, just do the right things. If you need to become an actor, it will become more and more natural as time goes on.

6. Buy a book or two. Jim Domanski is a good author to start with. Look him up on Amazon.com or at your local store for good ways to get more comfortable in your role.

Good luck!

easiest thing to do (corny as it sounds) is have a script ready. obviously it won't apply to every single customer but you'll at least train yourself to ask the right questions and come off more professionally than someone who's just fishing over the phone. helps to do a little research on the company you're callng too. what can you offer them in terms of service that they can't get anywhere else or what can you do better than what their provider is doing for them? eventually over time you won't need the script anymore and and can just wing it from your gut. as you progress you'll pick up on things they say that will lead you in the proper course of questioning. be prepared for lots and lots of no's. get's degrading after awhile but keep pushing through it and eventually you'll nab one. cold calling is a waste personally and you're looking for the diamond in the rough so to speak. keep your wits about you and treat every call like it was your first call.

Breathe. You may even rework the canned speech you read to them. Make sure to include all the points but reword it into your own words. That might make it easier.

Maybe it would be easier if you weren't sub-conciously knowing you're in a dishonorable profession. Get a new job.
