There are a number of recipes depending on what color, smoke intensity you want.

The simplest recipe involves mixing potassium nitrate and sugar over a flame.
You can find recipes on google by typing in "smokebombs". The first link for me was a recipe page.

You will need to be very careful when mixing it because potassium nitrate is used as an oxidizer in rockets. (now predominately amateur rocketry). The sugar is the fuel. So it is very possible that you can light the thing on fire while over the stove with some parts burning very strongly. I recommend buying a crock pot and using that to mix your stuff.

The best, safest, and most fun is to add dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide) to a water bucket. The "smoke" is basically water vapor and/or released carbon dioxide gas. Use a light fan and pulsing light to create more drama. You'd have to make sure you don't touch dry ice with bare skin. You can add dry ice pieces to a water bottle. If you are stupid and close the lid, you'd ask for trouble.

mix salt peter and sugar in a container and light it it will burn producing a lot of smoke or mix in gunpowder and you will get the same result as long as there are absolutely no clumps of gunpowder or you put it in a enclosed container.

if you can't follow the scientific language you shouldn't be cooking that stuff in your basement. it would be a good way to meet nice firemen as they try and put your housefire out. then you get to explain what you were doing...
