Before you send the e-mail, you have to tell the e-mail client (outlook, yahoo.com (if they support it)) that you want a "read receipt".

Otherwise there is no way to tell, and even if you say you want one you are not guaranteed to ever receive it.

All Internet mail programs that I know of can only tell you if a message was delivered - not if it was opened. Lotus Notes that we use at work will tell me when someone opens a message, but only for internal messages.

Since I don't know what program you're using, I can't give you step-by-step instructions, but look for a "read receipt" or "delivery receipt." That will send you an e-mail when the message has been delivered to the other person's inbox.
