Exactly. Sometimes its hard to visualize, but try this:

Draw a square to represent a 1 inch square.

Now draw a grid inside of it to represent a 1 inch square divided into quarters. (There will be three internal lines right to left and three internal lines up and down).

Then, mark off your 1/2 inch square, and you'll see it is one fourth the area of the 1 inch square.

Yes....a square with 0.5 in on a side has an area of 0.25 square inches, and a perimeter equal to 2 inches

Fold a paper in half one way then in half the other way. Unfold it, and there will be four squares. Each square is half the paper wide and half the paper tall.
