how to write a 785 mb file on a 700 mb cd?
I have a CD(700mb) which contains a MPEG file. But when I want to burn it on another CD of 700 mb capacity it shows a error message that "the CD has not enough space to burn this file. I opened the MPEG file and when look at the property it shows the file size as 785 mb. I wonder how a 785 mb file is written on a 700 mb CD !!!!!!!!???????
I have asked this question few minutes ago and received few answers. Most of the answers advice me to use Winzip. But my question is now- Does winzip help to reduce the file size?

You can use any sort of compression program to possibly reduce the size of the MPEG file to fit on a 700MB CD. Here are a few you can try:

7-Zip: http://www.7-zip.org/
bzip2: http://www.bzip.org/
WinAce: http://www.winace.com/
WinRAR: http://www.rarsoft.com/
WinZip: http://www.winzip.com/

Some of these are trial versions. But you have enough time to compress the MPEG file to see if it will fit in 700MB. And the compressed file itself will never expire like the software will.

The only problem is that you need a decompressor to read the file from the CD and view it. The computer you view it on will need an additional 785MB to decompress the file first, before Media Player can view it, and there will be an extra wait time while the file decompresses.

When you record more data than is normal on a CD, that is called overburning. Many disc manufacturers extend a recordable disc to leave a small margin of extra groove at the outer edge called the lead-out. Recording onto the lead-out is possible, but it depends on your CD recorder and the type of software you use to burn it.

Check your software to see if it supports overburning. There should be a way for you to tell exactly how much you can burn onto any given CD.

For example, if you use Nero ( http://www.nero.com/ ), run the Nero CD-DVD Speed utility which is part of the Nero Toolkit. You can find it in the 'Start > Nero > Nero Toolkit' menu.

Once you have Nero CD-DVD Speed launched, go to 'Extra > Overburning Test' to get the results.

Yes, winzip can reduce the file size, there is another program called 7-zip which does about the same thing but I think it compresses it more. ( I don't know but maybe you could compress the .zip folder in a .7z folder)

You need a CD-RW drive that is capable of overburning. Plextor and Ricoh CDRs are capable of doing that.
