Me and my friend wer debating about some issues that happend in America and that are current. And we got on the subject of rasciam and she said that slavery is over and racsism is over and she said thart Black people should get over it. I heard many white people say this. No racsim is not over, it's alive and well. Does Hurricane Katrina ring a bell, the Voting Rights Act hasn't even become a officail law. Latinos and Blacks have racial tensions. People still stare at a interracial couple. People still stereotype. And slavery isn't over either. Are you familair with the sharcroppers? They were a group of people who pick cotton and work for low wages. Unfortuantley these people have no knowledge of the outside world and they are stuck in a cycle of poverty. And many cotton fields were destryoed and the sharecroppers have no means of living.

Most of the people who answred this question just don't get it. Minorities could "get over" racism is they weren't always getting treated differently because of their race. We would love to "get over it", but it has to END to get over it. And for everyone who whines about affirmative action, if you're not qual;ified for a job or a school, affirmative action doesn't get oyu in. It only exists to protect people from racism and counter it. It's not "special treatment", it's FAIR treatment.

No i'm afraid it's not over, but we don't all think it's over. I still hear racial and even sexual descrimination jokes. I don't want to hear them so i leave the room. But no, more's the shame to the human race. The problem is...NO ONE... is exempt. All types of people discriminate every single race (not all people but those that do) discriminates against the other. In reality those that hate,...hate anyone not like them, no matter who they are. From executives to streetgangs to religious zealots. It all boils down to hatred. Thank god not all are like that. It's possible your friend grew up in an environment where she has not had to deal with that type of hatred...which is a good thing. Try to make sure she...neither one of you..... have to deal with it ever again. I will say this..it is a hard thing to explain to children if they see it (discrimination) and ask a question. My girls don't even think about the differences between them and their friends unless a question arises for some reason. Kids say whatever is on their mind. My wife grew up in an atmosphere where some of her family does discriminate..some of her uncles tell really terrible jokes and use terms I don't care for, so she doesn't discriminate but she's very paranoid, not sure if you know what I mean. But we were in the local Burger King and my 7 year old looked around and said ....very loudly I might add...Hey! We're the only white people in here! There was no malice there she doesn't think that way. She does what all kids do...they make an observation, then state it out loud. I started laughing and my wife was shushing her with wide eyes...that made me laugh harder. Sorry for rambling I just thought it was a cute story...also to show that anyone should be able to make observations like that without worrying or without anyone getting angry. I have also told my wife that my children are not to be around those particular uncles and she agrees whole heartedly. I hope this observation from one person helps you believe there is hope that it will end someday.

Even some white people are poor I am a living example of that. It is not that they are racest of color it is that the law dose not protect poor people not nearly as well as it dose the rich. In some places latinos and black people make a hole hell of a lot more money than white people do. I have never made much money and I have always had to work hard for what I have! Life may not come to you on a silver platter, but it makes you stronger and a better person to work for what you want! So many just care about money! If you do not like your job quit and get a better one, but good luck if you are in some states like colorado where the econmy is falling so all people are poor, and if you are moving to the coast in places where the huricans run wild than you are just asking for poverty to strick! If you are there I would pick up and move I did and I am not looking back or going back. It is up to you to do something about it move, get a better job, and go back to school the choice is there for anyone who is willing to go throw all the paper work and hard work that it takes to get the job done!

Racism is in no way over. Nor is it only toward blacks and latinos. You don't know any black people who are racist against whites?? Every race has racist people and it is a sad thing but it will never be completely over. It has gotten much better and I meet more and more open minded people everyday.

I am not familiar with the "sharecroppers" your talking about...it doesn't sound right but if they are getting paid and not being kept against their will it is not slavery.

All in all I think people of all races need to acknowledge that racism is out there but also not let it hold them back or get them down. The only way to work through it is to do the best you can to educate the close minded people you meet.

While there are at least 2 people on earth there will always be racism. Racism is a fact of life that can't be destroyed but only tamed and reduced. Human interaction and culture clashes are always going to occur because not only are immigrants spread across the world but our technology has brought us to speak instantly across the world. I feel that in America racism has turned its tables. I feel that nowadays the blacks undergrade the whites and its no problem because we feel that they have the right 2 considering they went through slavery. I dont believe this is correct though. Whites should be treated equally as are other nationalities.

Racism is alive and well and it's not just the whites that have a problem. Blacks think whites owe them something. Slavery ended long ago, before any of us were born. You shouldn't get treated special because your great-great-grandparents went through hell. It's not my fault, not your's or anybody else that is living today. It happened and it was bad, but there shouldn't be any handouts today because of it.
Blacks talk about being discrimated, yet form groups like the NAACP. If whites formed a group like that, the black community would go ballistic.
I am not a racist. I am a member of the United States Air Force and am willing to die for blacks, whites, browns, reds, illegal immigrants, etc.
Racism isn't over because people won't let it be.

Oh, I see. It is OKAY if white people work for minimum wage, and can not afford to raise families and die in poverty. That is OK, but lord forbid Blacks, Latinos, or any foreigner ever be permitted to do it. It is not racism that does this to PEOPLE, it is greed. As soon as all the blacks and other minorities join the human race against the greed of a select few, and quit thinking they are special, then racism will be over. Grow up, get educated, and join the human race.

I guess since everything has calmed down between white and blacks they think there is no more racism, but it's still as strong as ever. Especially in the wake of 9/11 and all the hostile feelings held towarsd Muslims and Arabs.

Plus some white people are still racist. The other day, I was grocery shopping and walking down this aisle. This white women with her two kids come walking the opposite way. She sees me, turns around, stops, looks at me as i pass, and goes off the direction i was coming from.

I doubt i was paranoid that day, racism is still strong in America, in the world alltogether

Hey,
Racism can never end. People just naturally assume they're better than a different race. I think we need to stop teaching racism to our kids, and start teaching acceptance. My dad is really racist but i am not at all. So usually you will pick up racism off of your parents. As long as groups like gangs, or orginizations like the nazis or the KKK exist it's a wall incapable of being crossed. White people think racism is over because they think by giving equal rights in context to african americans is freedom, but inside they keep the african nation in chains. They just don't want to admit that every1 is equal. That's the way it's been and that's the way it'll stay.

Obviously it is not over the signs are all around and the people who think it is are just ignorant and not willing to face the problem.Unfortunately, there will never be and end to racism..black against white or vice versa or between any warring races for that matter because there will always be ignorant and blind people in eeach and every race no matter what..hopefully for the lot of us that know it still exists and know that it is wrong..we will try to show the right way thats all we can do try...

Does Affirmative Action ring a bell?

Why is it ONLY white people are labeled as racists? By this very question, YOU could be considered racist. Katrina? yes, Katrina rings a LOUD bell, when we put up displaced residents from NO, we witnessed stunning behavour. That debit card they got, thanks to the TAX payers, some who are white, was used for LIQUOR and SMOKES. It was Nagin who messed UP in NO. NOT the President, not the "white folk" trying to keep the black folk down.

Talk about no knowledge of the outside world.
