Mark Mcgwire retired after the 2001 season, baseball made steroid use against the rules in 2003. Are we are going to retroactively hold players accountable for rules changes. Some day baseball may make it against the rules to smoke, drink, chew, cuss and chase women, what are they going to do then? empty the HOF?

Using may have given a hitter an advantage? but why is it that only hitters are singled out? You don't think pitchers were using too? I think we all know damn good and well what the answer is to that! . Everyone was playing under the same rules. Don't want so damn many cheap homeruns in baseball, move the fences back to a reasonable distance! Before the building of all these "modern" stadiums pitchers generally had parts of a ballpark that they could pitch to.

P.S. don't give me this , well but, Pete Rose crap, betting on baseball was against the rules and Pete knew it was. There are signs in every ML teams locker room, to remind them of this rule.. Not to mention all the written and verbal warnings against betting on baseball..

First of all, I'd like to point out that McGwire never broke the rules because the major leagues, at the time of his career, did not have rules banning the substances he used. As for the Hall of Fame, I don't think McGwire was good enough. He only hit .263 throughout his career. His OBP was high, but that was from intentional walks he got during and after his big seasons. That's not the result of a good eye. That's just the ability to stand in the batter's box for 20 seconds.

Mark McGwire should NOT be in the Hall of Fame. If Joe Jackson has been kept out for the Black Sox Scandal when he didn't even throw the Series, and Pete Rose has been kept out for betting on baseball, then Mark McGwire should be kept out for cheating which is far worse than their two crimes against the game. And anyone who doesn't think McGwire didn't take steroids has not done any research.

Yes, he should be in.

First, I'll address the comment someone made above, that he wasn't a good hitter, only a guy who put the ball over the fence once in a while. As for not being a good hitter, he had a career OBP of almost .400!! Yes, his BA was only .263, but that's because he had great patience and drew a ton of walks. And to compare him to Roger Maris is ludicrous. Big Mac hit 583 to Maris's 275, was twice as likely to hit a homer in any given plate appearance, and has an OBP 50 points higher than that of Maris.

Big Mac is 11th all-time on the adjusted OPS list, which is truly impressive company. The 583 homers are nice, as is the ROY award. An MVP award would have been nice, but it doesn't eliminate him. I certainly don't think he's the best guy to enter the Hall, but he's still worthy.

As for the steroids scandal, nothing was ever proven about Mac other than that he had andros in his locker, which at the time didn't prove he was doing anything illegal. Given the murkiness of the accusations against him, I can't see a reason to keep him out.

No - his final 3 years in the league is what would put him into the Hall of Fame and they were undoubtedly steroid filled. If you take 100, no 200 HR's away from Bonds he's still HOF material. Not the same with McGwire.

no

besides the fact that there is a cloud over his head for his very possible use of performance enhancers, he wasn't that good. Didn't hit for average, wasn't a great fielder, wasn't a great RBI guy. All he did was occasionally put balls over the fence. To me that doesn't grant HOF passage. If that was the case the Roger Maris should be in and Buck O'Neil should have gotten in with rest of the Nergo League players that did a couple of days ago.

PS - compared to Bonds he sucked as an overall player, roids or no roids for either. Bonds stats far surpass McGwire.

No he doesn't and many of the sports writers on the Hall of Fame committee have said they will not vote for him.

He walked all around that he did steroids.
