My hardwood floors are pretty old and it looks as though small pieces of the wood have chipped away leaving not just scratchs but actually gaps in the floor (some about as long as an inch and as wide as a centimeter). Can I just use wood filler to repair or there something better?

no, there is not really anything better. if you look to replace whole boards, you will end up with a finished product that doesn't match the rest. to really fix this, you need a new floor. BUT....the wood filler will do the trick. It won't look perfect but certainly better. apply the wood filler amply and then wipe it clean with your finger, the filler should only be in the hole and nowhere else. wait for it to dry, then give it a quick sand with some fine sandpaper. Get a few samples of wood stain that look pretty close to what you have on the floor, and test it on some spare pieces of wood. apply the stain with a small brush and when it dries you may go over it with a little polyurethane.

It would be advisable to use wood filler, and then once that dries here are two old fashion but true remedies that will work.
1-To refinish and revitalize wood use equal parts of linseed oil, white vinegar and turpentine, rub into wood surface with a soft cloth and lots of elbow grease.
2- Make a thick paste from instant coffee and a little water, rub it into nicks and scratches;you'll be amazed how it will look.
