I purchased a gently-used leather starter jacket from Craigslist. There are no stains, but it smells a little musty like it's been sitting in a closet. I'd like to deoderize / clean it. What is the cheapest, but best way. I considered putting it in the cleaners, but someone told me it would cost around $50, which is too much for my budget.

Any suggestions?

You have a couple of choices here. One is to find a large enough box (not plastic bag or container) to house the coat. Then put a plastic container filled with either borax or activated charcoal in with the coat and leave it in the box for about a week or so. The borax or charcoal (even baking soda will work) will absorb the odor from the coat.

Use tide, color safe bleach, calgon water softner in the laundry section, and/or a detergent with Febreeze in it. The commercial says it will help get rid of all odors. The other things will clean good and sanitize (the bleach that is) Wash on gentle cycle with cold water.

i imagine what's done is done, you merely ought to recognize the sacrifice the animal made for you - that you're obviously doing. do not forget that you'll get "humane" categorised meats, it is a a lot larger conventional of medical care in the route of animals. very few organizations do it, so i choose to help those that do, because the beef marketplace the following is merely twisted. it is like vote casting with my greenback. If I spend all of my money on the kinder stuff and inspire everyone i recognize to do it besides, possibly finally the beef marketplace ought to ought to regulate to help the customer base. EDIT: After better concept in this, you need to contemplate the concept of plastics rather for leather-depending. in case your shoes isn't made from leather-depending, it is made from plastic, and fabrics, it really is dealt with with terrible chemical substances (flame retardant neurotoxins as an social gathering) that are poor for the ambience it really is destroying our earth (killing animals AND their environments) even better than the beef/leather-depending marketplace. I wager you need to discover some hippie shoes even if.

I used to work at a store that sold leather jackets, and you really should have it professionally cleaned-- anything else will either shrink it in weird ways or cause the dye to run, fade or bleed...

Sorry!

Dry cleaning is the best...but I do think it costs that much to clean...I don't even pay that much to clean my comforter. You should take it to a dry cleaner and ask them.
