so after listening to this loosely defined musical genre i have come up with an extremely vague definition of a great style of music
emo is smiling and crying at the same time. It is music that when played can express a seemingly unexplainable emotion. When you listen to it you want to scream "yes yes yes (i know what you mean)" over someones painstakingly assembled lyrics or over a magical guitar bridge.
that is emo, to me anyway.
Today
Emo is one of the most widespread and hottest genres. Although it's moved far away from it's Hardcore beginnings, it still has it's independent spirit intact. That said, major record labels have taken notice and released albums by Jimmy Eat World, At The Drive-In and Weezer just to name a few, and many more are surely in the works. However, many newer bands are coming dangerously close to losing credibility by taking the music too far into the Pop/Punk realm of bands like Green Day or Blink-182
Emo (short for emo-core, itself a contraction of "emotional hardcore", now usually an
abbreviation of "emotional") is a term now broadly used to describe almost any form of

guitar-driven alternative rock that expresses emotions beyond traditional punk's limited
emotional palette of alienation and rage.

-There isn't a real consensus on what "emo" and "emocore" are, or if they are even different

-The "emocore" style has become broader over the years

-Often acoustic guitar with soft, high male vocals that dwell exessively on the singer's
feelings, especially melancholy remembrances of past relationships/mistakes in life

-This genre has lately been marketed heavily by the music industry to teenagers with bands
such as Dashboard Confessional and Taking Back Sunday, and has seen much commercial and
mainstream success.

-Some emo is full of complex guitar work, arty noise and unorthodox song structures and
some emo is closer to punk-pop but a little more intricate

-examples of some other bands...
Sunny Day Real Estate, Fugazi, Weezer, Promise Ring, the Get Up Kids, Braid, Texas Is

The Reason, Taking Back Sunday, Jets To Brazil, Pedro The Lion, Modest Mouse, At The Drive In,
Appleseed Cast, Death Cab For Cutie, Mineral

-but as chris carrabba said in the book "Nothing Feels Good..." by Andy Greenwald
"emo" really is a word that will ruin us all

-in the end everyone has there own meaning and its just anothe pointless lable

Emo is short for Emo-core, which was a subgenre of hardcore in the 80's. Some examples of bands are Fugazi and Rites of Spring.

emo's are emotional people. who are usually sad and depressed. Some cut, threaten to kill themselves.
the stereotypical look for emo's is the long hair in the face, dark clothing, not necessarily goth, but w/e.
it's also a kind of music. a least that's my opinion, i'm not emo so i could have it all wrong.

emo isnt just people that cut their wrists and have "weird hair". its just another meaningless label. but it can be used to describe a type of music...or style. emo music usually has very emotional lyrics that relate to the band. the emo style is more like tight jeans, band tees, and they usually wear black...but not all the time. and just to clear things up emo isnt the same thing as goth.

Why is this in Women's Studies?

Emo

Genre of softcore punk music that integrates unenthusiastic melodramatic 17 year olds who dont smile, high pitched overwrought lyrics and inaudible guitar rifts with tight wool sweaters, tighter jeans, itchy scarfs (even in the summer), ripped chucks with favorite bands signature, black square rimmed glasses, and ebony greasy unwashed hair that is required to cover at least 3/5 ths of the face at an angle.

EXAMPLE

::sniff sniff:: "The Demise of the Siberian Traintracks of Our Rusty Forgotten Unblemished Love" sounds like it would make a great emo band name. ::cry::

Emo

Punk music on estrogen. Often acoustic guitar with soft, high male vocals that dwell exessively on the singer's feelings, especially melancholy remembrances of past relationships/mistakes in life. A form of music that diverged from punk in the '80s, the name "emo" is derived from the emotive style of the lyrics and music. This genre has lately been marketed heavily by the music industry to teenagers with bands such as Dashboard Confessional and Taking Back Sunday, and has seen much commercial and mainstream success. The music has also spawned a subculture which conforms to certain conventions in dress such as tight sweatshirts, tight band T-shirts and horn-rim glasses. Adherents profess to exessively melancholy temperments. Males that adhere to the emo subculture are sometimes confused with metrosexuals; indeed the line between the two is somwhat blurred, though both groups claim to be intouch with their emotional side. The ephemeral and hackneyed nature of emo songwriting suggests that its audience will be restricted largely to teenagers. the genre suffers from a lack of credibility outside the aforementioned demographic group, much like current Nu Metal bands.

EXAMPLE

girlfriend: C'mon, lets have sex.
boyfriend: I'm too sad to have sex.
girlfriend: I'm sad too; lets have sex and cry.
boyfriend: I'm already crying.

EMO is a "new" class of rock. Examples would be "Taking Back Sunday", "Dashboard Confessional", etc. It is a shorthand for Emotional or emotive rock (depending on who you ask). It can be a bit whiny at times, but I like it.

I think you have to break emo down into 2 separate categories:
1 - fashion/life-style
2 - music

Fashion/lifestyle:
Think "GOTH: the next generation" ... whinnier and more into their own shallowness.

Music:
punk/alternative sound with songs primarily about youth angst lyrics but with a surprisingly upbeat and catchy instrumental.
