When I get my clothes out of the washer they smell good (like detergent). I immediately put them into my gas dryer, with a dryer sheet, and they come out smelling musty. Why? Can I clean it somehow? It doesn't look dirty inside.
It is a VERY old dryer, can that have something to do with it?

Sometimes it is not a matter of keeping the lint trap clean. Lint can also accumulate in the hose to the exhaust behind the dryer. I have the hubby pull out the dryer, vacuum up the lint that has accumulated behind the machine and disconnect the hose from the back of the dryer and using the hose, suck out the lint. You would be surprised at the junk accumulating back there. Then I go outside and pull out the animal guard that blocks the exhaust vent and using a wire brush, clean off the lint that gets trapped on the screen. Lint does take on a musty smell over time.

My aunt had a twenty year old gas dryer and had the same problem. She had to buy a new dryer. Over time, the gas dryers develope a certain musty smell that can't be taken away despite the efforts of washing out the inside of the dryer or dryer sheets or cleaning the filters. The smell is not coming from the place where the clothes are dried, instead the smell is the motor itself and makes the clothes smell musty or moldy. It sounds like it is time to buy a new dryer.

Good luck I hope I was some what helpful!
