They use the 555 exchange because the phone company never assigns numbers to it.
That way, people are not bothered by having their real phone number in a movie.

Because no real phone numbers start with 555, and they don't want to use someone's actual phone number. Having your phone number in a movie is a good way to get it called a million times by jackasses looking for the character.

Because there are no phone numbers that start with 555. This way, they avoid giving out a phone number that someone could actually call.

The 555 prefix has been set aside to use in movies and tv shows so people won't bug the real people who might have the real number if they used real phone numbers..

555 has been set aside for use in movies and TV because the only place it is currently used is for Directory Assistance; therefore, no one will be bothered if a real phone number is inadvertently used.

Because there are no real phone numbers that start with that. Movies and tv shows cant use real numbers in case they really lead to someone's house. Wouldnt it be annoying if you keep getting phone calls from people asking you to talk to a famous actor or actress?

funny thing is that they're starting to give out real numbers in some movies so when people call they get to learn more about the show/movie... I even heard one time that they had the real actors answering the phones...

Because some stupid idiots have been known to call those numbers in the movies for real. The movies are fiction and so are the numbers.
