ive seen a lot of these kind of things like "is cheerleading a sport?" and many others so i found the definition of "sport" on dictionary.com. it is...
A. 1. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
2. A particular form of this activity.
B. An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.
C. An active pastime; recreation.
so based on that i would say sort of for marching band. yes it is physical, active, requires quite a bit of skill, and can be competitive, but there arent really set rules or regulations you go by.just for the record i would say it is more a physically exerting art (band peps are more artists in my book)
then there is NASCAR, which by those definitions is a sport (and yes it is physical, they sweat out something like 6 liters in a race) BUT i would not consider it a sport.
but the real problem here is not if it is a sport or not, because people just want to be able to say, "yeah, i do a sport," to be cool, but the reality is if you say you do a sport and tell them it is band MOST people will laugh, so deal with it (i would personally rather be called an artist than athlete)

Is Pinball a sport? It has a ball!
In my opinion anything that relies on a machine in order to be competitive is not a sport.
Bicycling? It's man powered. Nascar? Sure if you don't put gasoline in the car. Althoug marching band can be cometitive, I think that the marching part can be considered a sport however the instrument playing is an art. Thus, band members can either be athletes or artists, but not both, I'm pretty sure how most of them will choose.

it absolutely is. and, to the first comment that marching band does not have rules or regulations?? you are so wrong as to be laughable! There are rules for how long the show much be, and penalties if you go over or under time. There are rules for how much time you must spend moving, and how much time you may remain still. and that is just for starters. it is certainly more physically demanding than golf or bowling, which are both recognized as sports. and to the people who think ANYONE can learn to march? only someone who has NEVER tried it would say that. Ignorance of the activity is NOT a reason to judge it as not being a sport. I would bet than ANYONE who spent at least 1 day in a marching environment would end up agreeing that it IS a sport.

Marching Band should be considered a sport. I ran more laps than half the damn track team. As flag captain we did a lot of warm up exercises, including running laps, and the physical exertion of the rountines is enough to make anyone tired and sore.
Now NASCAR, while I'm a fan, I don't know that I'd consider it a sport.

I'm in the marching band at Anoka High School in Anoka Minnesota. I also played football for a time. I definitely consider marching band a sport. It at times was more physically demanding than football was. And also there is also competitions for marching band making it a sport.
Now NASCAR on the other hand is not a sport. It takes no physical conditioning and is teaching kids to drive as fast as they can.

Marching band is tough and a good mental and
physical workout, but it is not a sport. NASCAR
is also not a sport (it is a car race). It can be a fine line
though and the definition is more about how people
think of them rather than a formal identification.

i agree with the first guy, it can be either a sport or an art. the sport part is pretty lame in my opnion though because marching in unison isnt always the coolest thing. but the rest of it is playing an instrument, and that is an art. its like having a violin competetion, its not to see who is better at a sport but who is better at doing that art.
