I would like to use household products, if possible, but I am willing to purchase commercial if it works.

Use Roundup or other Glyphosate product. If the plant you want to eliminate is too close to other plants for spraying, you can use a little paintbrush and just paint some of the leaves.

It's a shame to kill the beautiful plant like bird of paradise. Maybe you should take out the roots and give it to a nursery.
It's a beautifully plant.

I would use Round-Up. Make sure to get as much of the plant with it as possible. I've run into problems with the parts of the plat that were protected (i.e. roots under a sidewalk) started re-growing after the herbicide washed away. I have to go back and hit it several times to get it to die completely.

try salt...remove all stems from the main root system and drill into it and pour on a box of morton salt
