I used to live there and I had a roomate who was a carpenter. Carpenters actually do quite well there because the cost of housing is so high and wages are higher there in general, so people pay carpenters pretty well.

The problem is making it the first 3-6 monthes until you get established. The cost of living is higher, but the pay is higher too, so it equals out eventually, but at first you have to watch your savings until you get going and it's hard to be all work and no play when you first get there. But it can be done and there's plenty of time to play later. You got nowhere else to go :)

I moved over there with 2 bags and a carry on and I didn't have a place to stay or work. I had a credit card and a rental car that I lived in until I found a room for rent and I ended up living there almost 3 years.

You might check out Kauai too.

Join a union. Encourage your mates to do the same. Meanwhile, sleep on the beach when the weather is fine, and in inexpensive guest houses when it's not. Aloha.
